FOREST & PASTURE RAISED PORK

Pasture and forest-raised hogs raised in a regenerative ecosystem. The pigs are born on our property, move to a fresh paddock every few days, eat a custom-milled, soy free, corn free, non-GMO, NC-grown fermented feed, and live a life of leisure and belly rubs. The quality of their life and diet shines through in the texture and flavor of their meat and fat.

PIGLETS

We have high quality genetics and have selectively breed for the following criteria: meat quality, docility, and ability to thrive on a wide variety of forage. Our piglets are comfortable around people, extremely well-trained to hot wire, and are used to moving into new paddocks. Depending on the sow, our pigs reach 300 pounds in 9-10 months. They are mostly Meishan and Berkshire, and some piglets have small amounts of Glouchestershire Old Spot. While other pigs may reach 300 pounds quicker, we think the extra 1-2 months is worth it considering how stress-free our pigs are to manage, how much forage they utilize, and how much more gentle they are on the landscape because of their physiology and temperament. If you want easy, gentle pigs with excellent meat quality, send us an email.

ABOUT THE NURSERY

The genetics.

All plants are grown from seed or propagated on-site. We source seeds and cuttings from exceptional trees and shrubs, and only select those that out-perform others of the same species, either by producing bigger crops, better tasting fruit, or both. Local parent-stock ensures these plants are adapted to the local climate.

Some seeds and cuttings are shipped from other states (chestnuts, for example). Why? Because these genetics are far superior to what’s locally available, and these plants will still grow great in central NC. Better genetics means better production and disease resistance.

Non-natives.

We do sell some non-native species (like figs). Why? because they provide valuable resources without being invasive. We don’t sell non-natives that compromise local ecology. All non-natives are selected to grow well in the local climate.

Do you use chemicals?

No. No pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, fertilizers— none of it. Plants are only sprayed with homemade compost extracts. All fertility comes from healthy, nutrient-rich soil — nothing synthetic. A healthy population of beneficial insects, toads, lizards, and birds help keep the plants pest-free.

Pest and disease control.

Our approach to pest and disease control is biological, not chemical. Healthy plants deter pests and disease by having robust immune systems. Healthy, microbe-rich soil helps plants stay healthy. If plants are attacked by pests or do get diseases, they are culled and composted. Only the strong survive.

When and where to buy plants.

There will be on-site nursery sales once or twice each year, in the Spring and/or Fall. Dates TBD. Bulk bare-root tree and cutting orders will be available each winter, when the trees are dormant. If you want to order bulk bare root plants and/or cuttings, e-mail me.

Year-round plant sales are available to folks who hire me for chainsaw work.
